Things are pretty nutty in the run-up to the Olympics. Face masks, protesters, Bush ... its endless.
So, I decided to call-in the big guns and get a Chinese perspective from my China correspondent in Chengdu, Darcy Zhang.
An exemplar of The New China, you may remember his excellent reportage during the Sichuan Earthquakes. Even though he is a-ways from Beijing, he's certainly closer than I am, plus he affords a unique "man on the street" view that mainstream media doesn't provide. So as often as possible he will give his impressions of the likely newsworthy events which are bound to happen in the next few weeks.
1. Are there any Olympic ceremonies or preparations in Chengdu?
The torch was here on 4th Aug , and we did decorate the street. Since we are far from Beijing and we are not recover from the earthquake yet, we are not doing it too aggressively.
2. What did you think of the American runners wearing face masks when they arrived in Beijing, and do you think their apology was necessary and/or adequate?
About that, terrible, It is such a insulting to us, we work so hard and we never complain (about) the bad air when the Olympics (were) in LA. We really don't think it is necessary; what you think if we do the same thing in Dallas if you hold the Olympics?
3. Did the flame pass through Chengdu and did you see it?
As I said, yes , but there is some thing else I would like to say , you may see when the flame passed , in the TV , there are so many people are cheering up in the street. But the fact is , you are not allowed to see the flame freely. You have to apply (for) the access, and most of the people you see in the TV are arranged, I guess the government don't wanna anything happen to the flame. Cos you know there are some thing happened when the flame in Paris and also the western interviewer are always prepared to report negative things about flame , so i guess the government is very caution, but when the flame is here, there are lots of police here to protect it and some streets are controlled. It is not as we expected how the flame passed. It is more like a political assignment.
4. Do you plan to watch the Olympics alone or with friends ... do you have any special parties planned?
I plan to see the opening ceremony with friends, of course it is gonna be a big thing in China , Beijing even has a day off for the citizens to see the show , i bet every Chinese will sit in front of the TV to see the ceremony.
5. How do you anticipate the arrival of President Bush, and do you think he will be a good guest?
Actually we don't pay much attention to him , it is good to hear he is so confirmed to come here and he is here , but he is not going to be the president long, trust me , it is more feel like a show and ceremony (as) we prepare for ourself and the world, we are not going to treat anyone special.
6. Finally, we heard about the recent 6.0 aftershock earthquake in Sichuan this past week. Did you feel it?
Finally you mention it, the earth's shell here is getting crazy recently, an earthquake almost every day. We are used to it, but I think there gonna be a big one; after all, the signs show.
And so there you go, our first Olympic report. Stay tuned!
